Safe Routes to School - Phase 1
Parker, South Dakota
Owner
City of Parker
Project Description
The Safe Routes to School project involved the design of a 3650 ft long connective pathway on the north side of Parker and two school zone flashers along the north side of the school. A portion of the funding was also spent on bicycles and gear for the school.
The goal of this project was to provide a safe route for pedestrians to walk and bicycle in various neighborhoods throughout Parker. The first phase identified a need for a connective pathway from the city park along 6th Street to the intersection of highway 44 and Main Street. This pathway was designed to be an 8 foot wide concrete sidewalk and will be built within the street right of way.
Once constructed, the concrete pathway will serve as an ADA compliant pedestrian bike path allowing pedestrians to travel from downtown Parker to the city ball fields. Solar powered school zone flashers constructed adjacent to the school will notify approaching drivers of the school zone.
The project was bid in January 2010 and was awarded to Runge Enterprises, Inc. with an anticipated start date of May 15, 2010 and a project completion date of July 30, 2010
