Project Description

This project is located in a residential neighborhood in the southwest quadrant of the City of Sioux Falls.  The project included replacement of water main infrastructure, reconstruction of intersections to meet ADA standards, curb and gutter replacement, and asphalt resurfacing.  Several minor repairs to the existing sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems were also included.

The project origination was driven by the need for replacement of water main in these areas.  The need for replacement was mainly due to corrosive soils causing damage and occasional breaks to the water main.  Current materials and installation practices will make the new water main system less susceptible to soil corrosion.

The typical section for the streets on this project was 5” of asphalt concrete composite on 9” of aggregate base course.  There was also a “grade stabilization” section included in the plan to accommodate for unsatisfactory subgrade conditions.  The grade stabilization section incorporated a 12” crushed concrete base.  This grade stabilization section was used throughout the project, which allowed for improved resident home access and a better finished product.

Another key component of this project was developing and maintaining a working relationship with adjacent property owners.  Constant effort was made to help ensure that the construction caused as little inconvenience as possible for residents affected by the project.  The phasing of the project was an important factor contributing to the level of convenience for residents.  Additional communication was made through mail and email to keep residents informed on the status and upcoming construction stages.  Building temporary driveway ramps, complete backfilling, and extra blading were added measures also taken during construction to maintain homeowner driveway access as much as possible.
