Ash Street and Utility Improvements
Canistota, South Dakota
Owner
City of Canistota
Project Description
This project is located along the south side of Canistota. The existing water main is cast iron and the City has been experiencing several breaks a year a long this line. The existing sanitary sewer is vitrified clay pipe and is subject to a large amount of ground water infiltrating through cracks and joints of the pipe. The existing street has an asphalt mat and ditches to convey the storm water runoff.
The proposed project includes the replacement of 3,600 ft of cast iron water main with PVC pipe. The clay sanitary sewer main will be replaced with 3,600 ft of PVC and new manholes. The water and sewer services will be replaced to the property line. The new sewer main will be installed deeper to allow for more service area in future growth areas. This section of the sanitary sewer is the downhill portion of the system and future projects will branch upstream.
Approximately 3,400 feet of storm sewer will also be installed. This storm sewer line will serve as the main trunk line out of town. The existing ditches did not drain properly. Ponding of water and street flooding was common during large rain events. The new street will be wider and include curb and gutter so the existing ditches can be eliminated.
